Nestled in East Nashville’s Five Points neighborhood, Bad Idea is a wine-forward restaurant and bar that defies its name by delivering an exceptional dining experience. Housed in a beautifully renovated former church, the establishment offers a unique ambiance with its soaring ceilings, stained glass accents, and pew-inspired seating. The restaurant is the brainchild of owner Alex Burch, with the kitchen helmed by Chef Colby Rasavong, who brings his Laotian heritage to the forefront of the menu. Since its opening in fall 2023, Bad Idea has garnered national attention, earning a spot on USA TODAY’s 2025 Restaurants of the Year list.

The concept for Bad Idea emerged from a desire to create a space that celebrates the intersection of Laotian cuisine and natural wines. Chef Rasavong, a first-generation Laotian-American, crafts dishes that honor traditional flavors while incorporating modern techniques. Owner Alex Burch curates an extensive wine list, featuring over 125 selections from a 3,000-bottle cellar, emphasizing unique and natural wines. The restaurant’s name, “Bad Idea,” playfully challenges expectations, inviting guests to explore bold and unconventional pairings in a welcoming environment.

Bad Idea’s menu is a dynamic blend of Laotian-inspired dishes and inventive creations:

  • Scallop Crepe: A delicate crepe filled with scallop mousse, topped with a nam prik-infused blanquette sauce and garnished with a crispy tuile.

  • Cheeseburger Pithivier: A playful take on a classic, featuring Bear Creek beef, pickled green tomato, and Velveeta, encased in puff pastry and served with bacon jus. Available during Happy Hour.

  • American Pekin Duck Four Ways: A shared entrée showcasing duck prepared in four distinct styles, offering a comprehensive tasting experience.

  • Durian and Caramelized Milk Mille-Feuille: A standout dessert that combines bold flavors in a refined presentation.

The restaurant also offers a rotating late-night menu, inspired by comfort dishes like Japanese breakfast, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Location and Contact Information

Bad Idea welcomes both reservations and walk-ins, with the bar and lounge operating on a first-come, first-served basis. While there is no dedicated parking, street parking is available, and guests are encouraged to use ride-share services or public transit. Families are welcome, though the restaurant does not offer a children’s menu or high chairs.
