how it all started.
The original recipe started over 60 years ago in Mason, Tennessee when Napoleon “Na” Vanderbilt and his wife Maggie perfected a spicy, hand-battered chicken served from their tavern back door. Their son, Vernon “Gus” Bonner, opened Gus’s World Famous Hot & Spicy Fried Chicken in 1984. The family’s secret recipe has helped Gus’s earn accolades like Travel Channel’s “12th Tastiest Restaurant” and GQ’s “top 10 restaurants worth flying for” . Wendy McCrory, a longtime fan, later expanded the brand nationwide, upholding the family tradition .
